Plus Size and Asian Pacific Heritage Month!
Share
This month is Asian Pacific Heritage month and as I continue educate myself on other cultures, especially from a body image perspective, I continue recognize how being plus size is viewed so negatively across all cultures. Plus size is a topic that is often overlooked in Asian Pacific cultures and the fashion industry; but it is an issue that affects many people in the region. Despite varying traditions and attitudes towards body size, the general trend is that being thin is considered ideal. As a result, many plus size individuals may feel stigmatized or left out in the world of fashion (and we DO!).
The first step to addressing this issue is to acknowledge it. In many Asian Pacific cultures, there is a tendency to shy away from discussing topics that are deemed sensitive or taboo. However, it is important to bring attention to the challenges that plus size individuals face in terms of finding clothes that fit and feeling represented in media and advertising.
Many fashion brands in Asia cater primarily to petite sizes, which leaves plus size individuals with limited options. This can make shopping a frustrating experience, especially when trying to find clothing that is both stylish and comfortable. Additionally, some brands may not even offer plus size options, leaving those individuals feeling excluded altogether.
However, things are slowly starting to change. There are now a growing number of brands that cater to plus size individuals in Asia, providing more options and representation. In addition, social media is playing a huge role in breaking down the stigma around being plus size. Many influencers and bloggers are using their platforms to promote body positivity and self-love, which can be empowering for people who have been made to feel ashamed of their bodies in the past.
One thing to keep in mind is that there is no one "ideal" body type. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and it is important to remember that being plus size does not equate to being unhealthy or unattractive. It is possible to be plus size and confident, stylish, and happy.
While being plus size in Asian Pacific cultures comes with its challenges, those challenges are slowly being addressed. It is important for brands and media to recognize the diversity in body types and to provide representation for all individuals, regardless of size. Ultimately, the key to combating the stigma around being plus size is to promote body positivity and self-love, and to embrace the idea that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.
Let's celebrate each other and always remember, Your Curves, Your Style, Defy the Standards!
